Dance Klezmer Style

arranged by Marvin Rosenberg (Tara Publications)

$16.95

Reviewed by Wendy Morrison

63 pp. Seven traditional Jewish pieces in ensemble settings for clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and piano. The scores are stacked up together so that all players read from the same page, instead of being available as separate pullout parts for the clarinet and horns. Clarinet and trumpet parts in Bb notation, trombone and piano parts in C notation. Lovely trombone lines, and nice trading of leads and harmonies by clarinet and trumpet. In an ensemble lacking a trombone player, those lines could be performed by a cellist, or even an accordionist with good left hand skills who wasn't busy doing the piano part.

The arrangements are all fairly easy, and would be appropriate for an amateur combo just getting its feet wet in klezmer. The notation is large, clear, and easy to read. Chord symbols are provided for the benefit of guitars or other instruments that may be sitting in.

Only one gripe: it was a letdown to find no dance instruction in this book, despite the title and cover art. If the title were "Dance Irish Style" one would expect to find some dance instruction, not just a bunch of tunes. Why should it be any different for a klezmer book?
