TAKOMA GROOVE CAMP: Summer Musical Experience for Teens 2010

NOTICE: Hi friends and families! Please note that the format of the camp has drastically changed in order to better accommodate a more complete musical immersion for the students! All is explained below and of course feel free to call me with any questions.

Rob Nicholson 301-980-6131

Takoma Groove Camp is a musical day camp allowing beginner, intermediate, and advanced musicians aged 12 through 17 to gain experience playing in a contemporary band setting. During the camp students will be exposed to many facets of being that come together in order to make a complete musician. Not only do we get plenty of jamming and composing, but we discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle, mindfulness, and utilizing your senses to the fullest in order to reach one's creative potential.

As a student you will:

  • Explore MANY genres of music.
  • Completely Rock out.
  • Explore band dynamics and the group process as you take part in writing, arranging, advertising, and performing your material.
  • Learn how to set up the equipment needed to put on your own concerts after camp.
  • Take part in a focused, fun and supportive environment.
  • Learn from a faculty of experienced, accessible, down to earth, professional musicians and educators.
  • Design/manipulate artwork and graphics as you explore the marketing and promotion of your band.
  • Discover new abilities as we conduct the various individual and team building exercises designed to help you notice and improve your senses.
  • Get a lot of physical activity. After lunch we run various activities including ultimate frisbee, capture the flag, badminton, bocce ball. Participation is optional, but encouraged. An extra change of clothes is recommended.

Please Note our New Format!

This year we have formatted the camp into four sessions, please read below in order to find out which session would best suit the student.

Groove Camp 101 -- 1-week session June 28-July 2
This session is designed for beginning musicians who have never played in a band before. Experience would be helpful, but we are also willing to take dedicated complete beginners. Students show up with their instruments, amplifiers, lunch, a positive attitude and we' ll take over from there. Note: Drums will be provided on site. The concert will be held at 6:00 Friday July 2 at Seeker's Church, 276 Carroll St NW.

Intermediate Groove Camp -- Two 1-week sessions July 5-9 and July 12-16
These sessions are designed for non-beginner students who have some group ensemble experience but don't play in a band regularly. Perfect candidates for this session would be kids who play in school band but want to break out into a more personally creative venue. Students should already know the basic chords and scales on their instrument and be able to play songs from start to finish before entering the camp. Students can sign up for both sessions. The concert will be held at a location in Takoma Park at 6:00 Friday July 16.

Students who attend both intermediate sessions may be allowed to participate in the advanced Session listed below. Considerations will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Advanced Groove Camp -- 2-week session July 19-30
This session is designed for individuals and pre-existing bands who want to learn how to take their band to another level. New classes, new instructors, and new activities will be an exiting change for students who have attended camp in past years. The two week format will allow us to spend more time to work with marketing, graphics, theory, songwriting, music technology, and allows bands more time to craft their vision. The concert will be held in Takoma Park at 6:00 Friday July 30th.

Students who attend both intermediate sessions may be allowed to participate in the advanced Session. Considerations will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Art Opportunities -- This year we've decided to integrate more band art. Takoma Groove Camp will accept a small number of visual artists age 14-17 who would be interested in the opportunity to work with their art in a musical context. Students should be familiar with various genres and techniques, be friendly, outgoing, and a good team member. Artists -- You are a vital link between the musicians and the audience!

Intermediate Groove Camp: -- July 5-9, July 12-16 Each session $500.00/Both sessions $850.00
