Multi-instrumentalist Paul Oorts (mandolin, harp guitar, cittern, banjo, musette accordion, upright bass) is a seasoned dance musician and accompanist, at home in various branches of traditional music. He performs with his wife, hammered dulcimer and flute player Karen Ashbrook,as well as with DC-area Contradance bands and English Country Dance ensembles, most prominently Goldcrest and Trio con Brio.
As instructor or staff musician Paul has been at Common Ground (MD), the Swannanoa Gathering (NC) the Augusta Heritage Center (WV), HCamp in Kerrville (TX), Pinewoods (Mass), Timber Ridge (WV) , the Volksmuziekstage in Gooik (Belgium) and at the Sligo Creek Hedge School (back in our own backyard).
With The Rigatoni Brothers he researches and performs Italian-American mandolin and guitar music, an outgrowth of his day job teaching Italian and French at the college level.
He particularly enjoys working with students who have already mastered the basics of their instrument and want to become more effective ensemble players in a variety of styles and apply their knowledge to related instruments or different tunings of the same instrument.
