Violin and fiddle: Folk, Beginning Classical
Liberty Rucker has been teaching violin and fiddle for 15 years in the Washington, DC area. She offers instruction in beginning to intermediate classical, Celtic and American fiddle styles, popular and rock music, and music theory. She uses materials she has collected and created over the years which she adapts to each student's interests, needs and learning style. She enjoys teaching students of three years and above at any level. Having started at three herself, she has a special appreciation for the struggles of younger students. She also has a wide range of experience teaching students with special needs.
She has performed at local festivals and venues in a variety of styles and has appeared with Alan Jabbour, Maggie Sansone, and Stephen Wade, among others. In 2000, she released her debut CD, There Grew a Tree, under the name Liberty Dawne. In 2009, she co-authored the book, Fiddle Tunes Illuminated, with Alan Jabbour, in which she contributed transcriptions of 45 fiddle tunes the way he plays them.
Her teacher training includes courses with the Greater Washington Suzuki Institute covering violin technique and beginning Suzuki repertoire, working with an Alexander Technique instructor so that she could best teach her students violin technique that is healthy for their bodies, and study with numerous specialists of different styles. Additional teaching experience includes elementary music classes at the Friends Community School in College Park, MD, summer music camp sessions for the Levine School of Music, and the Kids Academy workshop at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival.
